EMDR Therapy in Mississauga Heal From Trauma, PTSD & Emotional Distress
When traumatic memories keep replaying, when anxiety feels overwhelming, or when the past won’t stay in the past, EMDR therapy offers a path to healing.
At Nurturing Wellness
We provide evidence-based EMDR therapy in Mississauga designed to help you process traumatic experiences, reduce emotional distress, and reclaim a sense of safety and control in your life.
Whether you’re struggling with PTSD from a single traumatic event, carrying the weight of childhood trauma, managing anxiety or phobias, or feeling stuck in patterns you can’t explain, our EMDR-trained therapists create a safe, compassionate space where healing can unfold naturally.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR helps your brain reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their emotional charge. Many clients experience significant relief in fewer sessions than they expected.
Signs You Might Benefit From EMDR Therapy
Many people live with the effects of unresolved trauma without realizing it has a name or that effective treatment exists. EMDR therapy can help if you’re experiencing:
- Intrusive memories
- Avoidance patterns
- Unexplained anxiety
- Difficulty trusting
- Performance anxiety
- Hypervigilance
- Emotional numbness
- Chronic shame or guilt
- Childhood wounds
- Grief that won’t ease
EMDR is particularly effective for trauma that has been “stuck” in your nervous system, events your brain hasn’t fully processed, causing ongoing distress even years later.
Our Approach To EMDR Therapy
At Nurturing Wellness, we use a compassionate, trauma-informed EMDR approach grounded in evidence-based practices designed to support healing, emotional regulation, and long-term resilience.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, EMDR helps individuals process and resolve distressing memories by using bilateral stimulation. Research shows EMDR is highly effective in reducing symptoms of trauma, anxiety, and PTSD, often without requiring detailed verbal recounting of painful experiences.
Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) Model
EMDR therapy at Nurturing Wellness is guided by the AIP model, which explains how unprocessed memories can remain “stuck” and continue to influence emotions, beliefs, and behaviours. EMDR helps the brain naturally reprocess these experiences so they can be integrated in a healthier way.
Trauma-Informed and Stabilization-Focused Care
We prioritize safety and readiness before trauma processing begins. Your therapist supports you in building grounding skills, emotional regulation strategies, and internal resources to ensure therapy progresses at a pace that feels manageable and supportive.
Mind-Body Integration
Our approach acknowledges that trauma is stored in both the mind and body. EMDR sessions incorporate awareness of physical sensations, emotions, and beliefs to support deeper, whole-person healing.
Your therapist will tailor EMDR treatment to your unique experiences, symptoms, and goals, because healing looks different for everyone.
How EMDR Therapy Helps
EMDR therapy offers transformative healing by addressing trauma at its root, helping your brain reprocess distressing memories so you can move forward with greater peace and resilience.
EMDR significantly reduces the emotional intensity of traumatic memories, often in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy. Many clients report feeling noticeably lighter after just a few processing sessions.
Rather than just managing symptoms, EMDR addresses the underlying traumatic experiences causing distress. By reprocessing these memories, your brain integrates them adaptively, so they no longer trigger the same overwhelming reactions.
Trauma can leave you feeling powerless and unsafe in your own body. EMDR helps restore your natural sense of agency, allowing you to feel more grounded, present, and in control of your emotional responses.
Negative beliefs formed during trauma, like “I’m not good enough,” “I’m powerless,” or “I’m unsafe,” naturally shift to more positive, adaptive beliefs through EMDR processing. Clients often experience profound shifts in how they see themselves.
By processing the memories fueling anxiety, panic, or emotional overwhelm, EMDR helps stabilize your nervous system. You’ll likely notice you’re less reactive to triggers and better able to manage daily stressors.
Intrusive thoughts, nightmares, and hypervigilance often decrease significantly as traumatic memories are reprocessed, allowing for more restful, restorative sleep.
When trauma no longer controls your reactions, relationships improve. You’ll find it easier to trust, communicate openly, and be emotionally present with the people who matter most.

time. Once memories are reprocessed, they typically stay resolved, meaning the relief you experience continues long after therapy ends.
The 8 Phases of EMDR Therapy
EMDR follows a structured, eight-phase approach designed to ensure safe and effective trauma processing:
History Taking & Treatment Planning
Your therapist will take a comprehensive history, identify traumatic memories to target, and create a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. You’ll discuss current symptoms, triggers, and goals for therapy.
Preparation
Before processing traumatic memories, your therapist teaches you specific techniques to manage emotional distress. This might include grounding exercises, safe place visualization, or container techniques. This phase ensures you have tools to stay emotionally regulated throughout treatment.
Assessment
For each traumatic memory targeted, you and your therapist identify the most vivid image, negative belief about yourself, desired positive belief, emotions, and body sensations associated with the memory. This creates a baseline to measure progress.
Desensitization
This is where the bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or tones) is used while you focus on the traumatic memory. Sets of bilateral stimulation continue until the memory’s emotional charge decreases significantly. Most people report feeling notable relief during this phase.
Installation
Once distress decreases, your therapist helps strengthen positive beliefs to replace negative ones (e.g., “I am powerless” becomes “I am capable and strong”).
Body Scan
You’ll scan your body for any residual tension or discomfort related to the memory. Any remaining physical distress is targeted with additional bilateral stimulation until your body feels calm.
Closure
At the end of each session, your therapist ensures you’re emotionally stable before leaving. You’ll be reminded of self-soothing techniques and what to expect between sessions.
Re-Evaluation
At the beginning of each new session, your therapist assesses the previous work to ensure changes have held and determines next steps.
Session Details:
Length: 50 or 75 minutes
Frequency: Weekly or bi-weekly
Duration: Many clients experience significant improvement in 6-12 sessions for single-incident trauma. Complex trauma or multiple traumatic experiences typically require 12-20+ sessions.
Conditions EMDR Therapy Can Treat
EMDR was initially developed for PTSD, but research has shown it’s highly effective for a wide range of conditions rooted in disturbing life experiences:
Trauma & PTSD
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) from ongoing trauma
- Childhood abuse or neglect
- Sexual assault or domestic violence
- Accident or injury trauma
- Medical trauma
- Witnessing violence or death
Anxiety Disorders
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- Panic Disorder and panic attacks
- Phobias (specific phobias, social phobia)
- Health anxiety
- Performance anxiety
Depression & Mood Disorders
- Depression with traumatic roots
- Complicated grief
- Persistent negative self-beliefs
Other Conditions
- Chronic pain with psychological components
- Dissociative disorders
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Eating disorders
- Addiction and substance use issues
- Body dysmorphic disorder
- Sleep disturbances related to trauma
Life Challenges
- Relationship difficulties stemming from attachment trauma
- Self-esteem issues
- Fear of failure or success
- Work-related stress or burnout
Research shows EMDR is particularly effective when symptoms are connected to specific disturbing events or memories, even if those connections aren’t immediately obvious.

Questions About EMDR Therapy In Mississauga
Your first session focuses on understanding your history, current symptoms, and goals for therapy. Your therapist will explain how EMDR works, what to expect, and begin teaching you grounding techniques. No trauma processing happens in the first session; the priority is building safety and trust.
EMDR is considered very safe when conducted by a trained therapist. Some clients experience temporary emotional intensity, vivid dreams, or fatigue as their brain processes memories between sessions. These effects are normal and typically subside as treatment progresses. Your therapist will equip you with coping tools to manage any discomfort.
Unlike traditional therapy that focuses on talking through experiences in detail, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess traumatic memories more directly. Many people find EMDR faster and less retraumatizing than talk therapy because you don’t need to verbalize every detail of your trauma.
Yes. EMDR is backed by over 30 years of research and is recognized by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association, and the Department of Veterans Affairs as an effective treatment for trauma. Studies show 77-90% of trauma survivors experience significant symptom reduction after EMDR treatment, with results maintained over time.
Treatment length varies based on the complexity and number of traumatic memories. Single-incident trauma (like a car accident) may resolve in 6-12 sessions. Complex trauma from childhood or multiple events typically requires 15-25+ sessions. Your therapist will discuss a treatment plan specific to your needs.
Yes. Many people don’t identify as “traumatized” but have experienced disturbing events that contribute to anxiety. EMDR can target the root experiences underlying anxiety, phobias, and panic, even if you don’t consider them “traumatic.”
No. EMDR doesn’t erase memories. Instead, it helps your brain reprocess them so they become less emotionally charged. You’ll still remember what happened, but it will feel more distant, like a memory that belongs in the past rather than something happening now.
Yes. EMDR is effective and safe for children and adolescents. Therapists adapt the approach using age-appropriate language, shorter sessions, and creative techniques. It can be particularly helpful for young people who struggle to verbalize traumatic experiences.
